Alternative Energy Source: The Pros and Cons of Using Solar Energy

If you are one of the thousands of people trying avidly to find an alternative energy source, then you may have encountered this little thing called solar energy. As you might very well know, solar energy is one of the oldest, most reliable and most resilient forms of energy. People have used solar energy in a number of ways before, but it is only in this time and age when sunlight power (as it is called) is efficiently being collected and utilized. So much so, that there are homeowners who are actually selling their extra electrical wattage (harvested from their solar panels) back to the electrical company.

However, like all things worth investing it, it really pays to know what the advantages and disadvantages of installing a solar energy setup.

Advantages

Solar energy is renewable. This means that you do not have to burn fossil fuels, cut down trees, or harvest other forms of natural resources (to the detriment of our planet) in order to gain usable energy. As long as the sun comes up in the daytime, then you can harvest the heat and light coming from it.

It can save you a lot of money in the long run. After you have installed the panels and hooked these up to your electrical lines, you can now reap the benefits of the free energy from the sun. This means that you do not have to rely on daily supplies from your former electricity provider and that it is with all likelihood that you will never be billed for your electrical consumption ever again. You also do not have to worry about increasing yearly electrical rates either.

In some states, the local government offers incentives to people who use alternative energy sources. At the same time, you also have the liberty to sell back to the government / electricity provider your excess power (only when applicable.)

When correctly installed, solar panels are relatively low maintenance. You can practically hook them up and allow them to remain like that for years.

Disadvantages

Many people find the price of solar panels and the installation of its energy system rather steep. A huge amount of money is needed in order to make the system work. The process can also become overly complicated when the electrician has to rewire the entire house's electrical conduits to this new power supply.

Solar panels would require a relatively large area to be installed in. If the homeowners want the install the panels on the roof, the structure has to be reinforced first to sustain the additional weight of the panels. If the homeowners want to install it at ground level, the area must be cleared first of overhanging branches and away from larger structures or trees that can cast shadows on the panels.

Solar energy cannot be harvested during the nighttime, or during overcast days. (However, there are solar batteries that help store electricity for such times.)
